14 December
Mira has settled in well to her new home at Port Douglas and her owner, Mihaela, sent me this email today:
"Thanks Rosemary. I take her to the beach or around the sugar cane fields every morning and play outside several times during the day. She is a handful but very loving and very entertaining as well. I have the time for her now so, I don't mind watching her all day. She does sleep several times a day so I can do other things. I love her she is my whole world now. My husband works overseas and my daughter moved out so it's just two of us at the moment. She had big meaty bone today and she put a lot of effort to chew it. She didn't give up for about a half an hour then, she had a sleep for an hour. She will have vaccinations in a week's time. I wish you a wonderful Christmas and New Year and keep in touch. Regards, Mihaela"
18 December
I received this very sad email today. Solo's dad was Cracker (BIS/BISS Ch Chilolo SXH Ice On Fire) and his mum was Beansy (BISS Ch Chilolo Eternity Ring)
Dear Rosemary
Chilolo BC Travling Solo 14/7/2004 - 17/12/2013
You entrusted us with a young adolescent Solo back in January 2005, and today we wished him a very sad farewell. He was the most magnificent dog, gentle yet exuberant and fun loving, but above all, loyal and deeply loving.
He shared with us a most wonderful life on our farm in the Riverina, welcoming and befriending cats, geese, calves, a horse and most treasured of all, his 2 best mates - my husband Steven and our son Tyson. He and Tyson grew up together, and their bond was strong. Although he's only 8, Tyson insisted on being there when Steven had to let Solo go this afternoon.
Solo and Steven were the best of best mates. Solo did everything he could with Steven - except the rabbit shooting, the guns scared the ridge off him.
When Steven took the kelpies down to the sheep yards, Solo would jump the fence and try to help. God, but he was useless with sheep. But 10 points for enthusiasm.
He went downhill very fast; only weeks ago he was robustly healthy. We knew it was time when yesterday he struggled to breathe and his abdomen was distended. The vet diagnosed an aggressive cancer, it was time to set him free.
Rosemary, I wanted to let you know what a spectacular dog you entrusted us with. We could not have asked for any more in our wonderful companion and are all deeply mourning his loss today. We buried him in our yard, under a shady tree and near his favourite snoozing spot. Even his mates the cats came over to say goodbye. I would love to invite another of your dogs to share in our life if you'd let us. Not sure if Steven will be ready yet, but please bear us in mind if you've got pet quality pups or even adolescents to rehome. Solo was so special to us, we will be lost without him and I would love to see his legacy live on in one of his nieces or nephews.
Kindest regards
Nicola Gentle

News & Updates

29/30 November
On Friday night at the Lockyer Valley Kennel Club show and Lincoln was awarded Best of Breed and Runner Up Best In Hound Group (Group 2) and Kali was Challenge Bitch and Runner Up Best of Breed. More exciting was Saturday night when I decided not to show Lincoln as Kali is in season so I only showed Kali and she was Best of Breed and BEST EXHIBIT IN GROUP (GROUP 1) which gave her her final points for her Australian Champion title making her our 70th homebred champion. She is developing so well and we are very proud of her.
23/24 November
At Caboolture Kennel Club Show Lincoln again was awarded Challenge Dog on Saturday and Sunday and Runner Up Best of Breed. These points were the final ones he needed for his Australian Championship title so he is Chilolo Champion Number 69!!
Kali was Reserve Challenge both days. It was very hot and they both performed really well under the conditions and against a good entry of RRs so they both did us proud as usual!
From a total of 12 shows that he has been entered in, Lincoln has been awarded Challenge Dog at 10 of them which is an amazing achievement. Tikki Tavey came along to the show and a friend took some updated pics of her. She always draws lots of attention because of her wonderful color and beautiful head.
22 November
Enya's babies are doing really well and eating ProPlan puppy like it may be the last meal they will ever get!!
17 November
At the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club show today Ms S Shen from Singapore awarded Lincoln Best of Breed and Best Australian Bred in the Hound Group and Kali was Challenge Bitch and Runner Up Best of Breed to Lincoln at the championship show. At the open show held before the champ show, the results were reversed and Kali was Best of Breed with Lincoln Runner Up Best of Breed. Kali went on to be awarded BEST JUNIOR IN SHOW. There was a good entry of RRs at both these shows so we were happy with the results.
15-18 November
In America, Emma and Trio went to 4 shows with moderate success. Day 1 - Winners dog and Best of Winners. Day 2 - Winners dog. Day 3 - Reserve winners and Day 4 Winners Dog.
In Brisbane, I took Lincoln and Kali to the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club Shows. At the open show Kali was Best of Breed and Junior in Show and Lincoln was Runner Up Best of Breed. At the championship show Lincoln was Best of Breed and Best Australian Bred in the Hound Group and Kali was Challenge Bitch and Runner Up Best of Breed. They both behaved really well so a good day all round.
22 November
And the latest update on Zali - what a champ she is!
Just a quick email to let you know Zali is recovering very well, the first 2 weeks were a little rough and had a few visits and a day stay back to our amazing vet, but she is now getting the swing of things and getting more and more confident everyday. Our big boy Simba is even letting her near him again, it's so nice to see. Some pics of our brave girl. Thank you so much for your advice and help with advice from others too, it's really helped us figure this out and do the best thing for Zali. Zali likes to wear a shirt, of the musical variety when she is outside so she doesn't get sunburnt while her fur grows back :)
Belle, Dan, Clay and our Ridgies xo
11 November
Another email on Zali's progress:
It looked a lot worse that first day with the swelling and fluid but today it is looking much better. She is a bit sad atm, not happy to not be allowed outside in her favourite spot in the garden bed sunning herself. Our big boy Simba is not wanting to be near her which is upsetting her the most we think, she just wants to be near him (and by near him we mean laying literally on him). She is only eating half her normal amount of food and now know treats mean medicine so she is turning her nose up at them now.
Smart little girl. She is most comfy on our bed, she is jumping up on her own and we don't have the heart to tell her she has to get off because she usually isn't allowed haha. She is standing different now with her back legs, not straight out like her normal stance.
9 November - 4 days after the operation and I received this email from Zali's owners:
Hey, she spent an extra night at the vet so came home Thursday night. The vet said she was not handling her pain so well so they wanted her in the extra night for observation. She is a bit out of sorts and just wanting to follow us around, won't sleep unless we sit with her a while. The op went well but was a little more involved than her surgeon thought because the tumour was under her shoulder bone in her armpit kind of so they had to take a lot of tissue away he said. She has has a few times where she has woke up howling in pain like she has gone to move and use her leg but it's not there :( the wound is so neat and clean tho! When we got home she RAN inside so fast we freaked out haha, then the next morning we found her on our bed...
No idea how she got up!
5 November
Zali's owners have decided to amputate her leg to prevent the spread of cancer. This was a huge decision and was reached after consultation with specialist vets and others who had experienced similar problems with their RRs. Fingers crossed all goes well.
1 November
Enya had an elective caesarean today as she was being cared for by a friend while I was overseas. She had 8 healthy babies. Unfortunately by the time I arrived home on 5 November, 4 had died from severe dehydration. The remaining 4 are now doing well and are now well and truly strong and healthy with appetites to match. Tikki is fascinated by them but Enya makes it very clear that she does not want Tikki in the bed with her babies!

Received this video clip today from Michele working with Shala (not Shayla as in the clip)
" Yay, thank goodness it's a Q, so pleased, one down and 2 to go. Rosemary this Q is for Cyber Rally, which is actually more tough than going in the ring here, the judge gets to examine everything microscopically. Cyber suits me as distance to comps can be an issue. The link for viewing is below. Cheers Michele "

Waterloo Bay Kennel Club Show in Brisbane and Lincoln takes out Best of Breed. Tikki is Reserve Challenge Bitch. It was a stinking hot day and they both behaved really well but unfortunately the judge didn't look at any of the RRs for a class in group.

12/13 October
Huge congratulations to Katrina and Toohey (Chilolo MBI Tooheys On Sunday) who competed in rally novice on Friday night and came second with a score of 97, gaining Toohey's novice rally title. On Saturday they entered 3 events. Toohey came first with a qualifying run in novice jumping, he and his best friend Poppy the Rottweiler came first in novice strategic pairs, then we had a ridgeback moment in the last run of the night when he didn't go into a tunnel. Well done Katrina and Toohey! Very proud of you both!!

also Challenge Dog and Best Open In Show
2nd Intermediate Dog Class:

3rd Intermediate Dog Class:
Chilolo MT Belmont Breeze
2nd Minor Puppy Bitch:
Chilolo WBI Bikwa
3rd Junior Bitch:

3rd Intermediate Bitch:
Ch Chilolo CBA Ruby Image (Karen Spark)
Best Ridged Dog:
Ch Chilolo MBI Coopers On Sunday
Chilolo - Most Successful Breeder and Breeder of Best In Show
Very proud of the newcomers, Karen with Ruby and Andrew with Cooper and the great job they have done to achieve so much in the past couple of years considering neither of them had shown a dog before they bought Ruby and Cooper.
It was extremely hot on the Sunday but it was a great weekend and good to catch up with other RR enthusiasts who we only see on occasions as specialty shows. The judge came from Belgium and is an experienced RR judge having officiated at many RR specialty shows throughout Europe.
I was thrilled to handle Trio to Best in Show considering it is his last show in Australia before heading to the US to live with Emma in Oklahoma. That is Best In Show number 27 for him which equals the world record for a RR. Super proud of this lovely boy.

May 2013
News & Updates

On 12 May I left for Europe to visit some friends and end up in Norway judging the RR Specialty Show on 19/20 May. What an honour - I feel very privileged to be invited. In France on 14 May, Anne Marie and I shared a bottle of wine and forced ourselves to eat some prawns!!! It was all delicious.
Then off to see how Brad was settling in in his new home in Scotland. He is looking lovely and maturing very nicely. The RR Show in Norway was held at a little place called Malungen which was set on the side of a lake. I arrived in the evening and the mist over the lake was spectacular. Some beavers had made a den near the edge of the lake so we sat with a glass of wine and watched the beavers at work.
At the show the following day, the dogs were lovely, weather perfect, food delicious and atmosphere excellent - who could ask for more. The dog I selected as Best in Show is Kangelani Gentle Thanzi by Clay and his litter sister, Kangelani Gentle Malaika by Clay was Runner Up Best in Show.
The day after the show I was lucky enough to be taken for a dog sled ride which was a great experience. Got cold, wet and filthy but it was great fun just the same! After dog sledding, I caught a train to Trondheim and spent a few days there before returning home. Just wish I had more time to be able to spend but hopefully I will be back there one day.
5/6 May
I was contracted to judge the Sight Hound Show in Western Australia on 6 May and the RR Specialty show was the previous day so I thought I would enter Trio. He was awarded Challenge Dog but was beaten for Best in Show and Runner Up Best in Show by the two bitches. Trio took out Best Ridged Dog and Best Gait In Show awards. I had a lovely day judging the Sight Hounds the following day and put up a very nice whippet bitch for my Best in Show.

16 March. Luvya ya heaps!!
24 April
Pics just through of Ace (Ch Chilolo SHHA Sharp Shooter AI) and Aleisha taking out Challenge Dog at the prestigious Toowoomba Royal on 12 April under USA judge Mrs Pat Cruz. Way to go Ace and Aleisha!!
19 April
Whisper's babies are getting up on their feet now.
6/7 April
Congratulations to Diane and Indy in Oklahoma on gaining Indy's American Championship title.
I received this email today "Hi Rosemary, Just a quick note. I finished my Barron boy, Indy, last weekend with back to back 5 point majors!!! Beat 23 dogs the first day and 25 dogs the next. Nice way to finish him. Diane" Indy is a half brother to our girls Ruby Aarts (in Holland), Ruby Sparks (in NSW), Saski and Image and are all sired by Am Ch Images In The Woods of Reddawg owned by Diane.
7 April
Ruby and Karen continue on their roll in the show ring by taking out Challenge Bitch and Runner Up Best of Breed at the Hound Club Show of New South Wales. Way to go Karen and Ruby!!
6 April
Good news from the Rhodesian Ridgeback Specialty Show held in Newcastle and judged by long time breeder/judge Mrs Di Jolly from SA. Karen and Ruby (Ch Chilolo CBA Ruby Image) 1st Place Intermediate Bitch Class, Best Headed Bitch and shortlisted to the final 4 from a class of 20 for Best Gaited Bitch. Andrew and Cooper (Chilolo MBI Coopers On Sunday) 2nd Place Intermediate Dog Class, 2nd Best Gaited Dog and won Best Ridge in Show. So proud of these guys! Neither Karen nor Andrew have owned a show dog before and both of them have put so much time into their respective dogs, Ruby and Cooper, and now they are really making their presence felt. Congratulations to all concerned.
We did not get to the RR show as Whisper had her puppies last Thursday.
Unfortunately she only has 2 girls. I knew a small litter was probable because Biko is the sire and he is over 10 years old now and in addition he nearly died in October so he did well to sire any at all! I had hoped to use frozen semen I have stored from Biko, but when Whisper was due to be inseminated, I could not get to Brisbane because of the floods so I decided to try a natural mating which I knew would not be as successful. The good news is that Image has now come in season and should be bred in the next couple of weeks. We will be using Zuka as the sire of her first litter which should be due in June.

Received this email today from Barron's breeder/owner:
Hi Rosemary,
My Barron boy did will in Ft.Worth last weekend. Won the Bred by class and went Reserve Winners dog beating 18 males. Not bad for a young boy (18 months). I am very pleased on how well he is maturing. Diane
Barron is the sire of Ruby Aarts, Ruby Spark, Image and Saski. Well done Diane!
Sunday 24 March
In the horrible humid heat at Durack, Lincoln and Kali both performed so well. Under Irish judge, Mr Cox, Lincoln was awarded Best of Breed and Kali was challenge bitch and Puppy in Group. She then went on to win BEST PUPPY IN SHOW!
Saturday 24 March
Received this sad email today regarding Ch Chilolo Amber Bandit. Amber with her one 'woopy' ear and her somewhat neurotic personality will be missed. Sincere thanks to Bob and Lesley for taking such good care of her for the past 15 years.
"I writing to let you know that Amber is no more, I had to euthanise her last Saturday evening (23/03/13). She and I shared our lives together for 15 years, and to the end she was a bossy bitch; Alex would walk in a large circle in order to avoid entering her personal space. Occasionally she would demand he play with her and he became most confused. We did lots of activities together, conformation showing (she was an Australian Champion thanks to Emma), obedience training (believe it or not she was quite good for a Ridgeback), lots of travelling together to rural NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
Alex and I both miss her. No noise of her overly long nails clicking on the floor; no using the long wall in the hall as a scratching post; no tipping up all the cushions and corners of the beds; no insisting on planting her nose in every shopping bag 'just in case'; no lying on her trampoline bed in the sun to the point of heat stroke. I have a vision of her in another place, disrupting the peace of Kalua, Mars, Chilli, Chakka and Binti.
The attached photos were taken at the end of February, shortly before her 15th birthday on 3rd March. Despite her increasing loss of mobility she was able to use the dog door to the end - ironic considering the trauma of teaching her to use it when it was first installed!
Thank you for being responsible for my having such a memorable dog. Lesley "
Saturday 23 March
Biko has a new litter on the ground from the lovely Norwegian bitch, Uma. 6 healthy puppies were born - 2 girls and 4 boys. Mum and babies all doing well.
Saturday 23 March
At Beaudesert KC show in Brisbane today, we showed Lincoln (Trio and Minty) for the first time since he was a baby puppy. He behaved really well and came 2nd in the open dog class. Kali was awarded Best Puppy in Group.

This is why we breed ridgebacks - not for the show wins but for the families who have so much pleasure added to their lives by living with a ridgeback.
"Hi Rosemary,
I have attached some of my photos to this email. Jazz and Rio were so loved that it was hard to choose my favourites. Jazz was a beautiful dog right until the end. Rio was our old man. He was grey very early on. He was such a princess and an old man at the same time.... Jazz just loved to sit on anyone, literally, and rub against whoever was willing to pat her. Rio was a bit more reserved. You couldn't go up to him and force him to be your friend, he would do it in his own time!!!
Thanks for letting me know about your upcoming litter. I don't think that we are ready for a new puppy just yet. Jazz and Rio are still very fresh in our mind. Jazz and Rio were amazing companions for our boys. Max, who is only just 2, missed out on spending lots of time with them. Jake and Oscar, who spent more time with them, are very compassionate towards animals which is a trait we are very proud of. We would like Max to get to experience the same love a pet ridgeback brings to the family.
Talk to you soon. Jo"
Thank you Jo and Anthony for giving Jazz and Rio such a wonderful home.

RIP Rory Hensman 16 December 1946 - 26 February 2013
It has been such a shock Rory passing away so quickly - he was 65. Rory's funeral was held today at Bela Bela in South Africa and about 250 people attended from all over the world.
Born and brought up on the family farm, "Braeside" in Zimbabwe, Rory Hensman has always been surrounded by animals of one form or another, ranging from gun dogs and polo ponies to countless orphaned wild animals and birds, and this led to his profound love and understanding of animals and his desire to learn all about them. He is a born and bred conservationist, and it was through this love for wildlife that he converted one of his commercial farms in Zimbabwe into a Game Reserve so that his family could also enjoy wildlife as he had.
In 1988 Rory obtained two young orphaned elephant from the necessary culling operations taking place in the Zambezi valley, with an aim of releasing them onto his game farm. When Jumbo and Miss Ellie arrived Rory realised that they were far too small to be released and so kept the elephant in a boma, he very soon realised that there was way more to these animals than he had originally anticipated and that they wanted to be a part of the daily farm life. Within a week of arriving Jumbo and Miss Ellie were following a handler around the farm, responding to their names and listening to basic commands. So it all began, Jumbo and Miss Ellie joined Hoggles the warthog, Nelson the kudu, Thika the serval, Didi the steenbok and became part of the menagerie of orphaned animals that found their way into the Hensman household. In 1992, Rory met Lindie and they married in 1993. Lindie rode in on Miss Ellie at their wedding ceremony on the farm.
Rory decided to keep the elephants in the fashion they had become used to, and as time went on he was given more and more problems and orphaned elephant. He was soon confounding the critics by taming and training these animals to willingly do various farm tasks such as rounding up and dipping cattle, checking farm fences, conducting anti-poaching patrols - all which the ellies thoroughly enjoyed doing. Rory's first real vision was to use elephant in anti-poaching operations with National Parks down in the Zambezi Valley, where elephants could be used to carry rangers, to otherwise inaccessible terrain, and where they could follow poachers day and night, all year round, using their incredible sense of smell. The elephant thoroughly enjoyed this challenge and on one occasion in 1994 when the next-door farm was burgled the elephant followed the robber's trail for 4 kilometres and 12 hours after they had committed their crime and shortly led the Police to the robbers house on a nearby farm, where the robbers had stashed their loot and the police obtained shoeprints and fingerprints leading the robbers arrest.
The Hensman's gradually acquired more elephants from various sources and then started training them for the first elephant-back safari operation in Zimbabwe after Rory was approached to do elephant back Safaris with his elephant by Craig White.
In 2002 Rory was forcibly removed by Robert Mugabe from "Braeside" in Zimbabwe along with many other Zimbabwean farmers. Rory moved down to South Africa with 12 elephants to Kapama Game Reserve then unfortunately he had to leave. In September 2003, he moved to Bela Bela in the Limpopo Province and after discussions with Phile van Zyl and Howard Blight, they agreed to create the company, Elephants for Africa Forever (Pty) Ltd (EFAF).

Whisper is definitely pregnant to Biko and she is due early April. We were going to use frozen semen from Biko given he turned 10 years old in December and he very nearly died from a paralysis tick in October. However when Whisper came in season I was unable to take her for progesterone tests due to the floods so I decided to try a natural breeding and it has been successful. Good for you Biko!!

What better way to celebrate Australia Day than to gain another Australian Champion??
In Canberra, Saski (Chilolo Saski's Image) owned by Lemmi Briedis and handled by either Belinda Mitchell or Helen Mosslar, went Challenge Bitch which gave her the final few points she needed for her Australian Champion title. Congratulations to all concerned and thanks to Helen and Belinda for helping out a new exhibitor.
